New Ala Moana Center Shopping Bags Evoke
Memories of Old Hawaii
Proceeds from all of Ala Moana Center’s newly redesigned bags will benefit Hawaii Habitat for Humanity

HONOLULU – Looking for a stylish new way to carry all of your shopping splurges around the mall? Ala Moana Center is now offering beautifully designed shopping bags that do double duty as a practical tote and also serve as a fun memento or keepsake, which can be used again and again. The shopping bags have a vintage feel – at first glance it looks like the backdrop of an oil painting. Both sides of the bag showcase different traditional island images.  One panel features a mosaic from Hawaii’s past -- including a hula dancer in a grass skirt, a ship setting sail and flowers -- while the other highlights a young girl dancing the hula. And to make your purchase go the extra mile, all proceeds generated from the new shopping bags will directly benefit GGP’s new charity sponsor, Hawaii Habitat for Humanity.

The new bags cost $1.50 each, are constructed from recycled or reclaimed materials and are available exclusively at Ala Moana Center. The bags’ unique vintage flare was designed by renowned Kauai artist, Bridgette D’Annibale. D’Annibale specializes in art with an Old Hawaii motif and is known for her ability to re-create vintage-era pieces with remnant and salvaged items, such as tile, wood, and materials taken from demolition sites. She is recognized throughout the art community for her ability to design and transform space through her art, and in the past has worked closely with local architects to bring a distinct sense of place to a new project.

Nationally, GGP has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity International in a three-year partnership to raise awareness about the need for safe and affordable housing, and to help build homes for  families in need in communities where GGP malls are located. Across Hawaii, GGP is aiming to raise $50,000 to put towards materials and supplies for the homes Habitat for Humanity builds.

For more information about the many ways that GGP and Habitat for Humanity are working to foster hope by building homes in Hawaii, and for information on how you can get involved, please visit www.alamoanacenter.com.

ABOUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IN HAWAII

For nearly 20 years, Habitat for Humanity in Hawaii has helped over 200 low-income families build simple, decent homes that they can afford to buy throughout the islands. Habitat affiliates are funded by tax-deductible contributions and aided by thousands of volunteers. Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent, affordable houses that are sold to families in need – partner families. There is no profit added to the sale price, and no interest charged on the mortgage. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor – sweat equity – into building their homes and the homes of others. Their monthly house payments are returned to a “Fund for Humanity” that is used to build more houses.
