This April It’s All About Song and Dance at Ala Moana Center

Don’t miss April’s mix of great entertainment and performances at Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage. Stop by and check out acts by our very own local high schools as well as entertainment from schools around the world – including teens from California, Michigan, Kauai, Maui, Virginia and Wisconsin. Come out to show your support for these youngsters and other exciting performances, including an appearance and hula by the reigning Mrs. Hawaii U.S.A. and the 2007 contestants. With singing, dancing and lots of family fun, there won’t be a dull moment at Ala Moana Center this month. Centerstage events for April include:

April 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29: Every Sunday this month Ala Moana Center’s Keiki Hula Show takes to Centerstage to entertain and dazzle shoppers. Come by from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and enjoy the elegant hula of Halau Na Mamo O Ka’ala and Kanilau, which highlights Hawaii’s talented youth.

April 1: Come down to Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. as students from the Maria Lauer Voice Studio light up the afternoon air with their lovely voices. The students range from ages 7 -18.

April 2: Get ready for some fun!  Enjoy the style and smooth moves of The Steptaculars as they perform a series of tap, jazz and Broadway dance numbers at Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Additionally, St. John’s High School will give an energetic concert, put on by their Redwing Band, from St. Johns, Michigan. The performance will take place at Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.

April 3, 10, 17 & 24: Mark your calendar! Every Thursday this April, the Polynesian Cultural Center will put on a free 45-minute performance from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. This exciting and entertaining event highlights music and dance from the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Marquesas, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Fiji.

April 3: Hailing from the East Coast in Norfolk, Virginia, Maury High School students visit the island to share their chamber and concert orchestra performance with Ala Moana Center shoppers from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.

April 7: Dance Artistry students and instructors get the energy flowing with a performance of jazz, hip hop, lyrical and break dances at Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Iolani School’s Dance Program offers Ala Moana Center shoppers the opportunity to enjoy a showcase of various dances including choreographic projects of contemporary dance and hula. The performance features the work of selected students from grades 9 – 12 and will run from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.

Additionally, University of Hawaii’s Percussion Band will delight shoppers with a performance at Centerstage from 4:00p.m. – 4:45 p.m.

April 8: Nogales High School brings their performance band all the way from La Puente, California to perform a variety of recital pieces. Their concert will take place from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Centerstage continues to host island visitors, this time students from Germantown High School in Wisconsin. These youngsters will showcase their melodic voices during a choir performance from 2:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

April 11: Centerstage comes alive from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. with the smooth moves of Hawaii’s Cabaret Dancers, featuring a variety of dances by Hawaii’s seniors! Don’t miss it.

Additionally, the Royal Hawaiian Band makes a regal appearance at Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. performing a variety of songs. The Royal Hawaiian Band is the second oldest and only full-time municipal band in the United States today. Stop by and experience a part of Hawaii’s musical heritage.

April 12: Stop by Centerstage between 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. as the University of Hawaii’s Concert Band puts on their annual spring concert performance. These college students will help shoppers get into the groove with their delightful music and catchy tunes.

April 13: Enjoy a live performance by the jazz and wind ensemble bands from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. The students hail from Lihue, Kauai and will perform from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. Bring the keiki and enjoy some neighbor island tunes.

April 14: Ala Moana Center helps host the O’ahu Jazz Festival, which will feature the musical talent of a variety of high school bands from across the state. The event will run from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and will also feature a special performance by the Navy Band.

April 15: Ka Lei Hulu Hiwa & Ka Lei Hulu Kupuna take to Centerstage with their performance of Hula Kahiko (traditional hula) and Hula Auana (modern hula). The halaus will perform from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. to live Hawaiian music.

In conjunction with the 2007 Grand Sumo Tournament in Hawaii, visit Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. for a Press Conference with Musashimaru, a yokozuna, which is the highest rank achieved in sumo.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity!  You’ll also enjoy a shamisen demonstration and keiki hula performance. 

April 16: Visit Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. to enjoy the sounds of Irvine High School’s Wind Ensemble, visiting from California.

April 20: The Hawaii State Ballet will delight Ala Moana Center shoppers with a classical and contemporary ballet performance from 7:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.

April 21: Central YMCA Dance Central offers shoppers and families the chance to enjoy their annual hip-hop and jazz dance show from 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. The performance features the work of dancers ranging in ages from 6 – adult.

Additionally, from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m., take pleasure in a dance performance put on by the Iwalani School of Dance. The group will perform a variety of hula, Tahitian, and Maori dances.

To round out the day, stay for Pekelo and Friends from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. as they talk story about Maui and share their traditional music of Hawaiian slack key and falsetto from Pekelo’s CD “Hana by the Sea.”

April 22: Nix Performing Arts Center will perform an engaging vocal and dance number from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. The group’s vocal and dance performance features the great voices and smooth moves of young artists ages 6-18 and will also feature the 2006 Hawaii Spotlight Champions.

April 25: The Birds, a woman’s Hawaiian ensemble from Japan, will showcase their talent for shoppers from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.

Additionally, take a break from shopping to watch the University of Hawaii Laboratory School as they feature their Senior Concert String Ensemble with a beautiful performance. The recital will run 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.

April 26: Feel the rumble of K-1 and Rumble World Entertainment when Sera’s Surf ‘N Shore K-1 Hawaii GP Press Conference takes to Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., including introductions of the 14 fighters and a Q&A session.

Swing by Centerstage from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. to feel the rush and energy of Islatango Dance Company and their Argentine tango performance.

April 27: Musical group Peahi will bring their energy to Centerstage with their performance of contemporary Hawaiian music from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.

April 28: Hoku Zuttermeister stops by Centerstage from 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. to share Hawaiian music selections from his much-anticipated debut album, “’Aina Kupuna.”

Get down to Centerstage from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. to get a front row view of an appearance and hula by the reigning Mrs. Hawaii United States. Shoppers will also get to catch a glimpse of the contestants for the upcoming 2007 contest.

Additionally, the Honolulu Dance Studio will be at Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. The group’s Honolulu Dance Company will perform a variety of jazz, ballet and hip-hop dances which will also feature selections from the Los Angeles Dance Excellence International Competition.

April 29: High school students from Wauwatosa West High School make the lengthy trip from Wisconsin to Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage. The school’s wind and percussion ensembles will perform on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.

Additionally, Honolulu Community Concert Band holds their spring concert preview at Centerstage from 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.

April 30: Enjoy an evening of beautiful music as the chorus and guitar ensemble from Kapiolani Community College puts on a spring performance. The recital will take place from 6:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.
