These Great Events in February
HONOLULU – This February Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage comes alive with a variety of performances and musical recitals to help shoppers get energized for the brand new shopping season ahead. This month features a variety of new events and longtime Centerstage favorites. Punahou School and Moanalua and Kaimuki High School offer shoppers the opportunity to enjoy their feature recitals and an exciting preview of their hit spring musical, “The Wiz.” Acts by the Ala Moana Center’s Keiki Hula Show and the Polynesian Cultural Center return for another stellar lineup of free performances that inform visitors and locals alike about Hawaii’s unique dance culture. Also, be sure not miss Ala Moana Center’s Chinese New Year Celebration that celebrates the lunar new year with a list of exciting, traditional events. Whether it’s for the great shopping or fantastic events, Ala Moana Center is where you want to be this February!
February 4, 11, 18 & 25: Every Sunday this month Ala Moana Center’s Keiki Hula Show takes to Centerstage from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. with a variety of songs and dances. The weekly performances feature Halau Na Mamo O Ka’ala and Kanilau. Don’t miss it!
February 6, 13, 18, 20 & 27: Visit Centerstage every Tuesday this February and enjoy a free 45-minute performance by the Polynesian Cultural Center. The show runs regularly from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. and highlights music and dance from the Polynesian cultures of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Marquesas, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Fiji.
February 9: Moanalua High School’s 9th Grade Concert Band will hold a concert this Friday from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. Bring the keiki and enjoy the talent of these young musicians!
February 11: Roy Sakuma’s Ukulele Studio pays a visit to Ala Moana shoppers this Sunday at Centerstage. Sakuma’s students, who range from five to fourteen years of age, will dazzle the audience with their quick fingers and a lovely vocal accompaniment. Take a break between 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. and check them out.
February 12: Are you ready for some high-stepping fun? Stop by Centerstage on Monday for some snazzy dance moves by the The Steptaculars. The group will perform a series of tap, jazz and Broadway dance numbers from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.
February 14: The Royal Hawaiian Band makes their grand appearance at Centerstage on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. with a performance of a variety of local Hawaiian songs. The Royal Hawaiian Band is the second oldest and only full-time municipal band in the United States today. Stop by and enjoy a taste of Hawaii’s musical heritage.
February 17: Punahou School’s Pop & Jazz Band will perform hit pop and jazz songs at Centerstage on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Punahou Symphonic Band will perform first from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., followed shortly by the Punahou Jazz Band from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
February 19: Kaimuki High School Performing Arts Class will stage a brief preview performance of their spring musical, “The Wiz.” Pay a visit to Centerstage on Monday from 6:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. and find out what the show is all about!
February 23: On Sunday the Hawaii State Ballet will dazzle shoppers with a performance of classical and contemporary ballet from 7:00 pm. – 7:45 p.m.
February 24: Gung Hey Fat Choy! Come down this Saturday and join in on Ala Moana Center’s Chinese New Year Celebration. The event runs from 12:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. and will feature traditional Chinese activities such as martial arts demonstrations, performances by various local lion dance teams, firecracker lighting, kung fu demonstrations and an appearance by the 2007 Narcissus Queen and Court. Once all of the Center Stage activities have been completed watch the different lion dance teams go throughout the mall collecting lai see (red envelopes) from Ala Moana Center merchants, a tradition of encouraging good luck and prosperity in the new year.
